You may have found yourself with more time on your hands as a result of widespread self-isolating measures being taken by many of us in order to stop the spread of coronavirus. Maybe you plan to write your first novel, start that side hustle you’ve been meaning to get off the ground, or (like most of us) not being quite as productive as you would like… But that’s ok! With so much great content to choose from, we’ve saved you from endlessly scrolling and put together a top 10 shortlist of binge-worthy shows on Netflix to keep you entertained:

Pose

Pose explores the underground world of the LGBTQ+ ballroom scene and those in it during the height of the AIDS epidemic in 1980’s New York. It grapples with difficult issues like discrimination and sexism but its larger than life characters and their infectious energy lift the mood throughout. It is powerful, emotional and joyous all in one!

When They See Us

This award-winning, gripping mini-series of 4 episodes can easily be binged in one day. Based on real life events of 1989, it looks at the lives of the five suspects who were wrongly convicted on charges related to the brutal assault of a female jogger in Central Park. A harrowing but necessary look at the justice system in America.

Derry Girls

Catch up on the hilarious Derry Girls in preparation for series 3 scheduled to come out this year. It follows the everyday lives of Erin and her gang of friends as they try to grapple with teenage growing pains during The Troubles in 1990’s Northern Ireland. The show is full of laugh out loud moments. With each episode only 30 minutes it leaves you wanting more and is easily binge-able!

After Life

AFTER LIFE

This darkly humorous look at grief starring Ricky Gervais is set for a second series to launch next month. Gervais stars as Tony, who is trying to come to terms with the death of his wife and the reality of life without her. After contemplating suicide, he decides he would rather live so he can punish the world for his loss by being awful to those around him. While it all sounds rather grim, it handles the sensitive topic in an amusing and sympathetic way.

Maniac

A truly original series which follows two strangers who are drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial. Over the course of three days they test a radical new treatment using pills that they’re told will permanently solve all of their problems, with no complications or side effects. However, things don’t go quite as planned. Trippy, genre-hopping adventures with dazzling visuals ensue.The perfect series for some much needed escapism that will keep you on your toes and wanting more!

Black Mirror

Each bleakly gripping episode examines an aspect of modern society with a particular focus on the unanticipated consequences of new technologies. Sometimes a little too close for comfort, especially in these times of uncertainty, but we promise you will be hooked from the get go.

Orange Is The New Black

There is a reason this has become Netflix’s most-watched original series! Now with seven seasons to plough through there has never been a better time to binge. The story centres around Piper Chapman’s unexpected conviction for transporting a suitcase full of drug money for her girlfriend 10 years earlier. Following her next 15 months in Litchfield Correctional Facility, the show explores everyday life and relationships inside a women’s prison. The diverse characters and gripping story-lines will have you invested right from the start.

Cheer

This six episode docuseries makes for prime guilty-pleasure binge material! Far from the vapid stereotypes we are used to seeing in American movies, here cheerleading is showcased as a highly-skilled and brutal sport. It follows the highs and lows of Navarro College’s competitive cheer squad as they train for the national competition in Daytona. Providing a candid look at the lives of young American college students it is thrilling, emotional and entertaining.

Mind Hunter

This two-series crime thriller directed by David Fincher follows the story of the agents in the FBI’s behavioural sciences unit who pioneered the development of modern serial-killer profiling back in the 1970s. Blending fact and fiction it uses engaging characters to get inside the heads of real life monsters. Dark, psychological and haunting, it’s perfect for those true-crime fiends among us!
